LEP’s Global Ambassador Returns from Cameroon
We are happy to report that our global ambassador Lukwesa Morin returned this month from a busy and fruitful trip to Cameroon. Ms. Morin was traveling to the country on behalf of LEP and participated in several school speaking engagements, meetings with public officials, and interviews with both the popular magazine ‘Nyanga', and CRTV’s ‘Midday Live’ program on national television. During her trip Lukwesa was a spokesperson for LEP’s success in Uganda, with the hope of gaining support for the organization’s expansion into Cameroon.
Lukwesa began her trip in the country’s capital Yaoundé, where she met with different journalists and spoke about literacy as a humanitarian concern, as well as LEP’s initiative to integrate digital resources into its libraries. She then visited the bustling city of Douala, where she spoke with Dr. Sammy Chumbo, the president of Cameroon Academy of Sciences.
The following district on Lukwesa’s itinerary was Bamenda, where Ms. Morin was received by Saint Fredrick primary school and its 1,300 students. Lukwesa delivered a motivational speech to the student body on the importance of continuing their studies and developing their reading and writing skills. When Lukwesa discussed LEP’s use of Raspberry Pi’s in its classrooms with Michael Mubang, the school’s proprietor, his response was enthusiastic. Mr. Mubang remarked that the Cameroonian government would be receptive to and likely fund this kind of initiative. After the speech the children performed a traditional dance and got to meet Lukwesa individually.
At Lukwesa’s return to the capital she was interviewed by CRTV, and spoke on array of topics, including literacy and its personal significance to her. She conveyed her message to the Cameroonian youth, and described her both her academic journey and the story behind her winning the title of Miss Africa Union.
LEP is very grateful for Lukwesa’s willingness to advocate for our cause abroad, and is thrilled that her trip resulted in several positive leads with respect to LEP’s potential expansion into other countries neighboring Uganda.
